The increasing involvement of urban colleges and universities in neighborhood redevelopment has improved the campus experience and spurred economic development in many communities. Institutions that are considering additional community involvement should assess the impact of community outreach on the institution's mission and strategic goals as well as the institution's ability to complete a project. If community development is right for a certain institution, there are a variety of federal funding tools available to many colleges and universities interested in outreach.
