Epidemic Change

Presenter(s): Phyllis Grummon, Michigan State University; Karin C. Rade, Michigan State University
Convener: Richard Yeager, Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott

Increasingly, planners are asked explicitly to create an environment that evokes and supports change. Change, however, is more than just a set of benchmarks and a timeline for actions. A complex set of factors influence the success of change, particularly when a broad base of support is critical for success. This workshop provides a framework for change from the field of epidemiology. Participants in this workshop will learn about epidemiological principles‹agents, infection, and environment‹and how to use them to create change on campus. Epidemiological concepts allow planners to use the tools they already have in a more systematic and effective way. The morning lays the groundwork for understanding how these principles work to create and sustain change. The afternoon allows the participants to experience and apply the principles learned in the morning through the use of a simulation created by the presenters, The Change Game. This simulation engages participants in roles at the All-U campus as it seeks to create itself as a learning organization.

This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-seventh annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–37, in San Diego, CA (USA), in July of 2002.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–37 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP–37, our digital archives of SCUP–37 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
