Changing a University and School's Financial Structure to Achieve its Core Missions

Presenter(s): James Elsass, Northwestern University; Heather J. Haberaecker, Northwestern University Medical School
Convener: James R. Martin, Ai

Major strategic goals for Northwestern University are the expansion of its research programs and for the medical school to move into the top rank. Serious barriers were declining clinical revenue streams nationwide, and an inflexible university financial structure which did not support the required revenue growth for the medical school to respond. Presenters will describe the goals, process, and results of defining a new financial incentive structure, including the intended and unintended impacts on the university and medical school, and the interplay between the new financial structure and the school¹s core mission.

This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-seventh annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–37, in San Diego, CA (USA), in July of 2002.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–37 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP–37, our digital archives of SCUP–37 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
