The Campus and the Car: A Reluctant Revolution

Presenter(s): Barbara J. Chance, Chance Management Advisors Inc; Christine Cousineau, Goody, Clancy & Associates Inc; Kathleen Mallon, University of Rhode Island
Convener: Couper G. Gardiner, BHDP Architecture

As campuses across the country become simultaneously denser and greener, campus access becomes an increasingly complex issue. This session examines the case of the Kingston Campus of the University of Rhode Island, which is undergoing a transition from free surface parking everywhere for everyone to parking fees by user group, surface parking in periphery lots, and a parking garage closer to the core. Mixed-use garages on different campuses will also be discussed as examples of solutions that meet several objectives.

This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-seventh annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–37, in San Diego, CA (USA), in July of 2002.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–37 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP–37, our digital archives of SCUP–37 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
