A Model for Collaborative Research and Education? Planning A New Silicon Valley Campus
Presenter(s): W. Anderson Barnes, Barnes & Co.; Kevin Lamb, Carnegie Mellon University; Barbara Maloney, BMS Design Group
In the heart of Silicon Valley, NASA is planning a world-class, shared-use educational and R&D campus, built on partnerships with governments, universities, private industry and non-profits. Carnegie Mellon University is a partner in this endeavor. Challenges included topics such as program start-up and management, joint governance with NASA, partnerships with the University of California, a joint campus plan for two national universities, and last but not least, cost and trustee buy-in. The session will evaluate the successes, pitfalls, and lessons learned from this ambitious move by Carnegie Mellon University to think ³outside the box² of traditional campus planning and design. |
