University of California, Berkeley New Century Plan: Reconnecting Mission & Vision in the 21st Century to Rebuild the Foundations of Excellence

Presenter(s): Edward Denton, University of California - Berkeley; Thomas E. Lollini, University of California - Berkeley; Kerry O'Banion, University of California - Berkeley
Convener: Calvert W. Audrain, The Art Institute of Chicago

The 1898 vision for the University of California-Berkeley campus as the "Athens of the West" was developed through an international design competition that set the stage for early 20th century American campuses. The landmark design and dramatic setting, looking out across San Francisco Bay, resulted in a world-class architectural and landscape legacy hosting the work of five AIA Gold Medalists and some of the century¹s most famous landscape architects. In 1998 the campus embarked on the New Century Plan, a strategic facilities master plan that links academic intentions to the physical development and capital investment strategies of the campus. Learn about this expansive plan and the opportunities it offers for complementary strategies in other areas of the campus.

This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-seventh annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–37, in San Diego, CA (USA), in July of 2002.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–37 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP–37, our digital archives of SCUP–37 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
